THE ASTERIX PHENOMENON
First appearing on 29 October 1959 in Pilote magazine, Asterix quickly became one of the most beloved comic creations of all time. The first comic album, Asterix the Gaul, was published in 1961 with an initial print run of just 6,000 copies—an extraordinary contrast to what followed.
To date, more than 370 million Asterix books have been sold worldwide across 34 titles. Laid end to end, these books would circle the Earth twice, weighing an astonishing 12,900 tonnes—the equivalent of 8,880 Eiffel Towers or 400 lorries carrying 35 tonnes each.
Asterix has been translated into 111 languages and dialects, adapted into 9 animated films, 4 live-action movies, inspired over 100 licensed products, and even boasts its own theme park, Le Parc Astérix.
First published in English in 1961 in the now-defunct Children’s Digest, Asterix has proven to be timeless. As The Sunday Times declared,
