Description
NFPA 921, Guide for Fire and Explosion Investigations, establishes a scientifically grounded framework for conducting fire and explosion investigations and developing fact-based conclusions regarding origin, cause, responsibility, prevention, and resulting damage or injuries. Recognized by the Organization of Scientific Area Committees (OSAC) as the forensic science consensus guide for fire investigations, NFPA 921 reflects the collective expertise of more than 600 forensic science professionals.
The 2024 edition expands and updates guidance to address emerging challenges and investigative best practices, including enhanced discussion of confirmation bias, investigative opinions, and expressions of certainty; the effects of suppression activities on ventilation and fire flow paths remote from the area of origin; reorganization of electrical system fire effects into Chapter 6; the addition of four general fire cause classifications for investigators and authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs); strengthened guidance on investigator safety, health, and wellness; expanded coverage of fires involving hybrid and electric vehicles; and a comprehensively revised chapter on wildfire investigations featuring new terminology and unique indicators.
