Description
2024 International Residential Code International Code Council Series1st Edition sets comprehensive requirements for one- and two-family dwellings and townhouses up to three stories. It covers building, plumbing, mechanical, fuel gas, and electrical systems. As a result, it serves as a single, trusted standard for residential construction.
Structural and Fire Safety Updates First, the 2024 IRC strengthens wall bracing and fire separation rules. Builders must align braced wall lines with physical walls or place them between multiple walls. In addition, two-family dwellings now require a 1-hour fire-resistance-rated separation, even when no lot line exists.
Egress and Life Safety Improvements Next, the code improves emergency egress requirements. Emergency escape and rescue openings must now include a clear 36-inch-wide path to a public way. Furthermore, designers must use engineered designs for all storm shelters.
Attics and Residential Sprinklers The 2024 IRC also updates attic and sprinkler requirements. Habitable attics may now occupy no more than half the floor area below. At the same time, the code requires sprinkler systems in new dwellings to improve life safety.
2024 International Residential Code International Code Council Series1st Edition Wind Loads and Structural Design To align with national standards, the IRC updates wind speed maps to match the IBC and ASCE 7. Additionally, Table R301.2(2) now reflects revised component and cladding wind pressures. These changes also account for hip and gable roof conditions.
Deck Design Enhancements Moreover, deck construction now requires greater structural consideration. Designers must account for snow loads, footing tributary areas, post height, and updated guardrail requirements. Consequently, decks achieve higher safety and durability.
Footings and Wall Construction The code also revises footing and wall standards. Updated minimum footing size tables improve accuracy. In contrast to prior editions, the code now limits cripple wall requirements to exterior walls only.
New Construction Methods To support innovation, the 2024 IRC introduces new appendices. These include guidance for cob construction and 3D-printed construction, expanding approved residential building methods.
Mechanical and Ventilation Changes Meanwhile, the code allows a 30% airflow reduction for balanced ventilation systems. However, it now prohibits commercial gas cooking appliances in residential buildings.
Plumbing System Updates Plumbing provisions also receive updates. The code increases the required head pressure for DWV water tests to 10 feet. Additionally, it permits air vacuum testing for plastic DWV piping.
